Mixed plastic sorting and washing facility, applying a flake separation technology, was opened by Biffa in 2011 at Redcar and upgraded in 2013. The PRF currently sorts and reprocesses a pre-sorted polypropylene (PP) packaging input stream, consisting of pots, tubs and trays from the household waste stream, producing high-quality washed PP flake outputs. Some of the output is processed through Biffa’s food-grade HDPE recycling facility at the same site and go back into the manufacture of new milk bottles.
